PC memory and storage sizes
Memory and storage capacity of drives are expressed in the same units.
In increasing size they are:
- bit - binary digit - can store 0 or 1
- byte - 8 bits - can store numbers 0 to 255
- kilobyte (KB) - 1000- bytes (enough for a simple web page)
- Megabyte (MB) - 1000 kilobytes (enough for an mp3 music track)
- Gigabyte (GB) - 1000 Megabytes (enough for a movie)
- Terabyte (TB) - 1000 Gigabytes (enough for a collection of movies)
Common device sizes
- CD - 700MB
- PC memory - typically 8GB to 32GB
- DVD disc - 4.7GB, 8.5GB or 17GB
- USB memory stick - 256MB to 64GB
- blue ray disc - 25GB or 50GB
- PC hard drive - typically 1TB
